Solar Drive

Launched in May 2016, Solar Drive was Green Frontiers’ initiative to unite rooftop solar power generation with electric vehicle charging, creating a practical pathway for zero-emission travel across Sri Lanka.

Sunlight to power mobility

The company noticed that most cars on its fast-charging network charged during the day, and only about one in ten at night.

“Most of vehicles are getting charged in Green Frontiers fast charging network at the day time. Only about 10% getting charged at nights. This means we can actually make our vehicles to run by sunlight!”

The net metering initiative

Solar Drive was conceived as “a project aimed at initiating a revolution in net metering based Solar power generation in Sri Lanka”. The primary obstacle to widespread adoption of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across Sri Lankan residences and businesses was high upfront installation costs.

To overcome this barrier, Solar Drive set a target of deploying 100 rooftop solar PV installations across the country within four months.
